The first of the ‘Iconic Landscapes’ series of photography tours run by Jonathan Chritchley, and where better to start than the legendary Big Sur on the coast of California. Big Sur is a sparsely populated region south of the Monteray Peninsular on the coast of California where the Santa Lucia mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. The area has featured in numerous movies and books, with authors such as Jack Kerouac and Henry Miller waxing lyrical about its raw, stunning beauty. The terrain offers amazing views across the ocean, with beautiful rocky coves and dramatic beaches, giant sea stacks, massive redwood forests and the wonderful backdrop of the Santa Lucia mountains. Jonathan will show you how to make the set of this light and these wonderful locations, working with his ‘fine art’ approach to help you achieve a stunning set of photographs from the trip.
The tour starts and ends in San Francisco, where you’ll meet in a hotel close to the airport for the first night. A good hearty meal will follow a slideshow and presentation by Jonathan, then early the next morning you’ll head off to the stunning coastal town of Carmel where you’ll be based for 3 nights, shooting at dusk and dawn to make the most of the beautiful coastal light. Then it’s time to head further south for a couple of nights, where there will be more dramatic seascapes, the redwood forests of Pfeiffer National Park and, something that we shall be doing from time to time on the Iconic Landscapes Tours, on one evening a special appearance by a very respected and well known special guest photographer who will show you through some of his incredible work and chat about his techniques.
Then finally on Friday it’s time to head back to San Francisco for your flights home, or onward journey if you decide to stay in the US for a while. All in all a fabulous experience in a truly iconic coastal location… one not to be missed.
