ABOUT US

Welcome to Ocean Capture, photography holidays, courses, photo tours and workshops in France and worldwide.
I've been fortunate to live in, work in and photograph the Aquitaine area of France, in the south where the Pyrenees Mountains dip their toes in the Atlantic ocean, since 1998. I'm also lucky enough to earn a living doing what I love best: photographing beautiful places. I started photo workshops, holidays and courses in the Spring of 2007, and have to say that it's one of the most exciting things I've ever done. It's an immensely rewarding experience showing people the best places to photograph in this beautiful area of France, and I guess my clients must enjoy it too because we now have a 68% rebooking rate!

Whether you're a beginner, intermediate or pro and want to visit and enjoy photographing one of Europe's best kept secrets, then these photography holidays are for you. Dramatic seascapes, long sandy beaches, sand dunes, mountains, pine forests, lakes, great light, stunning sunsets and plenty of wide open space - and small groups of no more than 5 people with access to your own exclusive digital workstation with callibrated monitors using the latest versions of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop - all the ingredients are here for an exceptional photography experience.

We also run photography tours in other areas such as Iceland, China, Venice, Greenland, Africa and Ireland - please check the website for details.

Please have a look around, check the FAQ page, and if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to email me, or call me on 00 33 671 00 37 69.
Hope to see you soon,

JONATHAN CHRITCHLEY
WORKSHOPS: BIARRITZ, FRANCE/SOLENT, UK
TOURS: ICELAND SOUTH COAST, ICELAND 360 TOUR, GREENLAND, AFRICA, VIETNAM, VENICE, SOLENT UK.

Born in Wimbledon, London, Jonathan's infatuation with the sea started after moving to the sailing town of Lymington on the south coast of England at the age of 14. Having studied photography at Poole Art College and assisted various marine and travel photographers, Jonathan moved to the coast of south west France in 1998, and now lives close to the town of Biarritz, where the formidable Bay of Biscay, the Pyrenees Mountains and the mighty Atlantic swell provide a dramatic backdrop to his photographs. He also spends much of his time travelling to some of the best water locations in the world working in and around the ocean to create his trademark dramatic, ethereal images. Passionate about the sea and sailing boats, Jonathan attempts to perpetuate through his work the beauty and purity of our all too fragile environment and celebrate the stunning grace and architecture of classic sailing vessels.

Jonathan’s images are seen around the world in exhibitions, galleries, home decor stores, magazines and books, and form part of many fine art collections internationally. He also writes for many different magazines including a regular monthly column for the prestigious UK publication Black & White Photography.

In early 2007, Jonathan started running photography workshops on the coast in south west France and in other locations. His company Ocean Capture is now one of the most successful photography tour and workshop businesses in Europe, aimed at people with a love of photographing the shoreline, forests and lakes, in perfect light and with space to breathe. Due to the very high booking rate of these workshops, Jonathan introduced other locations, such as Italy, China and Iceland, into the schedule in October 2007 and these trips have also proved exceptionally popular.

Jonathan was shortlisted for International Photographer of the Year 2009.

KATHY WHITE
WORKSHOPS: JURASSIC COAST, UK
TOURS: CHINA, CUBA

Kathy's photographic experiences started underwater several years ago whilst living on the beautiful island of Koh Tao in Thailand.
After moving back to England, the cold UK waters were not as appealing as the warm, tropical ones she was used to so she took up landscape photography to keep her photography skills up to scratch in between overseas dive trips.
This rapidly became just as much of a passion as underwater. Kathy's love for the ocean has had a huge influence on her land photography; you will often find her out photographing the dramatic coastline of the UK. Kathy has participated in many Ocean Capture Tours and workshops, including trips to China, Greenland, Iceland and Italy. She now leads workshops in Dorset, UK and photo tours to China and Cuba. Her images and articles have been seen in many photography magazines in the UK.

“ I love to be outside regardless of the weather. Some of my favourite images have been made during stormy, wet weather so black clouds generally do not deter me!
My favourite time to photograph is late in the day, catching the last golden glow of the sun, watching the light transform from day to night and capturing the movement in the water and the skies above.
Unfortunately that magical light is gone all too quickly but it’s a good excuse to go back again tomorrow …”

BRIAN COONEY
TOURS: DUBLIN BAY, WEST COAST of IRELAND, GIANTS CAUSEWAY & NORTHERN IRISH COAST
A veteran of many Ocean Capture Tours, including Greenland, France, Venice and Iceland, Brian is a true black and white specialist. His monochrome sea and landscapes have wonderful atmosphere and great feeling, but the fact that he is also very gifted at producing wonderful street photography was one of the main reasons Jonathan really wanted Brian to join the Ocean Capture team. Originally from Dublin, Brian has travelled the world with his camera, settling for several years in the French Alps. But the call of Ireland has proven too strong, and this Autumn he is moving back with his lovely wife Vicky to the country that he loves, and where, from Spring 2012 he will start running Ocean Capture tours, in the Bay of Dublin, the fabulous West Coast, and the Giant Causeway in the North.

"I was very honoured and excited when Jonathan asked me to join the Ocean Capture team. I have been on many trips with Jonathan and I have always admired his relaxed approach, his enthusiasm and his passion to deliver a great experience so I look forward to showing you around Ireland, my favourite country in the whole world. Over the last few years I have made some great friends on the different trips with Ocean Capture and I look forward to meeting many more in the future, so come to Ireland with me and experience a land of ancient myths and legends and an amazing landscape that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime (not to mention the photographs !)"
